Flipper: gamified crypto app for beginners

Most crypto apps feel like a trading terminal. I designed an iOS app that walks beginners from fiat to their first trade and makes predicting the market feel like a game, not a gamble.

TL;DR

Problem
Beginners dropped off during fiat-to-crypto onboarding.
Solution
A step-by-step onboarding plus a predict-to-earn mechanic that teaches by playing.
Impact
onboarding cut from 9 steps to 4; first purchase in under 3 minutes.

Context & problem

Business goal

Open the crypto market to non-technical people and ship an MVP that proves trading can be accessible to a mass audience.

User pain

Two things scare beginners away: buying crypto is complicated, and traditional trading interfaces are intimidating.

Why it’s hard

The MVP had to balance the thrill of a fast prediction game with the safety a financial product needs.

My role

Senior UX/UI designer on the MVP. I designed the product flows end to end: fiat-to-crypto onboarding with KYC and card payments, the predict-to-earn game, the wallet and the visual and haptic feedback.

Discovery & research

Two barriers to remove

Getting the first asset and making the first trade. Everything in the MVP was checked against one question: does this make either step easier for someone who has never touched crypto?

Product model

A secure custodial wallet lets people buy assets instantly with standard payment methods, without managing private keys. On top of it sits the core value: instead of complex futures exchanges, users predict whether a coin goes Up or Down in ultra-short 30-second rounds.

Design strategy

Radical simplification

For the MVP I cut everything a beginner doesn’t need to make a decision, and kept the screens that matter big, clear and thumb-friendly.

The micro-cycle

The trading interface is built around one short loop: pick a direction, watch the countdown, see the result, go again.

Key decisions

1. Cutting KYC friction without cutting corners on compliance

One onboarding flow combines KYC and card payment in a few taps. Blockchain complexity, gas and networks, stays behind a friendly UI.

2. Game mechanics that motivate without feeling like gambling

Big, intuitive Up / Down triggers and a visual countdown timer build anticipation and engagement. The wallet section stays clean and calm, so money never feels like part of the game.

3. A line chart instead of candles

Candles and market depth went. A sleek, responsive line chart puts the focus on the instant price movement, which is the only thing a 30-second round needs.

Final design

Design system & UI

Visual feedback was critical. Distinct haptics and celebration animations reward wins and reinforce the playful nature of the app, while the wallet uses a quieter, reassuring visual language.

Outcome & impact

  • Onboarding: 9 steps → 4; first purchase in under 3 minutes
  • Time to first asset: from hours to minutes, thanks to the simplified custodial wallet
  • High retention and session frequency from the 30-second rounds, confirming that people want faster, more engaging alternatives to holding or day trading
  • A foundation for a scalable consumer app that pairs the stickiness of mobile games with the financial upside of crypto

What I learned

  • For beginners, removing a feature often helps more than explaining it.
  • Excitement and financial calm can live in one app when each has its own space.
  • Feedback is part of the product: haptics and motion carry as much meaning as copy.
